Year 11 English - Blackrock

Hi guys! This is my first 'blogging' adventure! (Be patient with me . . . ) I thought it would be fun to have a place where we could chat about some of the stuff we do in class.
The best thing about this is that you can share ideas any time they occur to you. You can also read your classmates' comments. Let's see how we go . . .

When we watched the film version of 'Blackrock' a number of you said you found it disturbing. I did too. I was blown away at the end; kind of stunned which is amazing when you think about the fact that I already knew the plot. I haven't had that kind of reaction to a film for quite a while.

What was your response to the film?
What questions did it raise for you?
Which film techniques did you find most effective and why?

My response to the film was that i did too think it was disturbing in the fact that you were able to see the distress on Tracey's face. The brutality of the guys and how they didn't care made it worse to the situation of Tracey.

One of the questions we were wondering was how Jared could regret it more then the boys who actually did the crime..

The close ups of Traceys face were definately effective in the way it showed how traumatic the experience was.

What was your response to the film?

My thought and response to the film was that it was more graphic and in detail. You could see the way the characters acted towards each other, the language they used and the settings in where they were.

Which film techniques did you find most effective and why?

the music used was effective as it showed the culture of the setting, to hear if danger was coming or in emotional events such as :tracy's funeral.

What was your response to the film?
The film was very disturbing and also very horrific to watch. it was a shock to see alot of confronting scenes.

What questions did it raise for you?
After watching the film, some thoughts that arised were that it could happen to anyone, and that no-one is invincible. also, i kept thinking why jared didnt stop the rape when he saw it happening and knew that it was wrong. also another question that arised was about the way the boys treated the girls. how could they be so insensitive and not realise the value of all girls and women.

Which film techniques did you find most effective and why?
All the techniques used in the film were effective as everyone was in shock at the end and the message of the film was portrayed accurately to viewers.

What was your response to the film?

I found the film very confronting in many ways. Reading the book and watching the film were both very different. Reading it didnt have as much impact as watching it right in front of you. At times it got very brutal e.g. when the rape and murder was being shown. But watching the film enhanced my understand further but at times confused me as the film changed alot of scenes and it kind of altered the way the characters were portrayed and their importance.

What questions did it raise for you?

Some of the questions that were raised as i was watching the movie were, 'Is this most youth cultures behave?' 'Are these type of scenes common in our society today?' 'Why do the girls let the boys treat them that way?'

Which film techniques did you find most effective and why?

The film technique that i found most effective was the setting, when and where.

I thought that the film was highly disturbing with the explicit scenes that were shown. Especially the rape scene.. I have never seen something so confronting. The film really gave me an insight to how rape case made such a big impact on a community.

The film techniques such as the camera angles focused on Tracy really made the whole scene effective because it felt like I was there watching her get raped.

My question is that.. what would I have done to stop this rape.. would I have reacted the same way as Jared? Or would take action.

we both found the film very confronting. it raised lots of questions, one question being why didn't Jared make any attempt to save tracy. one camera technique that we found effective was from the rape when it was all seen from Jared's perspective.

The events of Blackrock the film, opened my eyes to how close to the truth this film could be. It left me thinking what would i do in Tracey's position or in Jared's... how would i react... i felt mortified when i viewed the rape scene. I also thought, how could guys think that way about women !!!! LIKE OMG !!!! DON'T THEY HAVE A BRAIN OR DO THEIR BRAINS ACTUALLY LIVE DOWN THERE!!!

well it would be a lie if i said i would like to see the film again EVENTHOUGH the film was effective and close to reality....i guess....

What was your response to the film?
my first reaction was shocked because you hear about these sitautions happening on the news but you never see the images, with this film you see all aspects which i wasnt use to. it was scary to think that this happend once and sadly is still occuring.

What questions did it raise for you? that in todays soceity you have to careful and even know you think it will never happen to you it can, leigh leigh would have thought the same thing and looked what happend to her. also to NEVER NEVER leave your girlfriends at a party, club or wherever! to stick togther and always keep and eye on them!

After watching the film version of Blackrock, i realised that everyone had the same response as it was a very confronting and disturbing film.

It raised many questions for me such as how strong and over powering the mateship was between the boys in Blackrock and how the girls preferred to act as individuals. Also how weak the relationships were between the children of blackrock and their parents and how it reflects who they are.

The film techniques that i found most effective include the camera angles as they portray and deliver the characters to us in an effective way.

The film was alright, very disturbing, the language was like hows it going.. the flashback techniques were most effective, because it shows jarods guilt.. but apart from that the film was a lot different from the play!!

Girls, it's great to read your honest responses about the film. You raise some worthwhile questions such as why Jared would see the crime and do nothing - this is the power of 'mateship' that we have discussed in class; how very strong it is & therefore how frightening it is. The identity of Jared is tied so tightly to his 'mates' that he cannot fuction just as himself.

Good stuff - keep thinking!
